What Can I Do?
Join us to explore what each of us can do bridge the gulfs that separate us from others.
Carl Rogers 2018 Annual Conference
January 31 - February 3, 2018
San Diego, California
What Can I Do?
Our conference will provide ample opportunities to address this theme in the company of others - informally, in small and large groups and in our presentations. As in past, we will provide the space, the climate to be open, to speak our piece, to be listened to and understood, and to hear what others really have to say. Through these experiences we hope to develop a greater understanding of how we contribute to or help maintain these divisions, and what we can do to reach across them.
It is always easier to see the role others play in fostering/creating divisiveness - it is much more difficult to see our own role. Do we, for example:
- Recognize how our biases and prejudices affect the way we listen to and respond to others?
- Judge, criticize and disparage others whose goals and perspectives conflict with our own?
- Talk rather than listen?
- Attempt to understand how others’ attitudes and values, fears and beliefs relate to their identity and behavior?
The tendency to dehumanize or demonize people because they hold different beliefs and values generates a cycle of attack and defense which further separates us. Only through a quality and respectful dialogue can we bridge this gap, see the humanity in others and perhaps reconcile our differences. As Abraham Lincoln said so insightfully: I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends.
Let us start this experience among ourselves. We encourage people from diverse experiences, backgrounds and positions to join us - it will only enrich our experience and bring it into the real world.
Come to San Diego this January and engage in a quality dialogue where listening is the main objective, as Rogers taught his whole life.
Call for Presenters
We invite participants at our 2018 Conference to submit proposals for presentations workshops, demonstrations, lectures, panel discussions, stories of significant import, and other formats not yet imagined. We request that presentations relate to our theme Bridging our Differences in Challenging Times but we will consider other topics which you consider of value to our participants.
Please address your proposals to Will Stillwell email@example.com
